Permits
This section is primarily responsible for building, zoning, and fire prevention permit review, issuance and inspection. Key functions include enforcement of the commercial & residential building code(s), the property maintenance code, commercial fire & life safety inspections and responding to resident & business concerns.
Bethlehem Township adopted the Pennsylvania Uniform Construction Code (UCC) and adheres to the 2018 International Codes, as well as the referenced standard ICC ANSI A117.1.2009 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities. The Township also enforces the 2009 Edition of the IFC with adopted ordinance.
When is a Permit Required?
The UCC as well as the ordinances of Bethlehem Township requires permits for many types of projects. Activities requiring permits include:
Zoning Permit Only
- Detached garages (under 1,000 square feet)
- Decks (under 30" from grade level)
- Sheds and accessory structures (under 1,000 square feet)
- Driveway (expansion or addition)
- Patios
- Fences (temporary and permanent)
- Retaining walls (48” or less from grade level)
Construction Permits
- Any structural change/alteration
- Plumbing
- Electrical
- Retaining walls (over 48” from grade level)
- Mechanical/HVAC (new and replacement)
- Replacement water heater
- Reroof (commercial only)
- Replacement windows
- Decks (30" or more from grade level)
- Pools (permanent and temporary)
- Finished basements
- Living space conversions
- Patio roofs
- Retaining walls
- Hot tubs, spas and jacuzzis
The above list is not all-inclusive. Bethlehem Township has adopted ordinances and the UCC which govern the activities requiring building permits. Some activities are excluded, however may still require a zoning permit. Please contact the Permit Department at (610) 814-6435 for more information.
